The island of Majorca (Mallorca) off the east coast of Spain is the largest in the Balearics, which collectively form one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, and certainly in the Mediterranean. Majorca took off as a tourist Mecca in the 1960s, when a development boom spawned the building of hundreds of high-rise hotels, apartment blocks and shopping centres which now line most of the island’s coast. There are three main regions for tourism, the south coast, the east coast and the north coast. The capital, Palma which still retains some of its historical flavour sporting grand mansions and a magnificent Gothic cathedral in its bustling centre is ideal for short breaks but other resorts in the south may suit you better for a longer holiday. Take a look at Palma Nova, Santa Ponsa, C'an Pastilla, El Arenal or Magalluf. The northwest coast offers some secluded coves below the peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, and several quaint old towns and villages. Check out Alcudia, C'an Picafort or Puerto Pollensa. The east coast offers some great family friendly resorts such has Cala D'Or, Cala Millor, Cala Ratjada and Calas de Mallorca all of which offer superb gentle sloping beaches that are ideal for young ones. When to go

The major resorts on the south and eastern coast are open all year but you will find that the majority of resort in the north close between November and April. Temperatures in the south average in the low 20's Celsius during the winter months but rise to the high 20's during the summer peak season.
